Pharmaceutical Nanotechnology

"Nanotechnology: Technology that is dedicated to the design and manipulation of matter at the level of atoms or molecules, for industrial or medical purposes, among others."

The importance of pharmaceutical nanotechnology for drug therapy lies in the
possibility of supplying both low molecular weight drugs as well as macromolecules
as the peptides, proteins and genes, in a localized or directed way, towards a certain tissue of interest.Pharmaceutical nanotechnology is focused on the development of formulations of therapeutic agents as biocompatible nano-complexes, including among others, nanoparticles, nano-capsules, micellar systems, dendrimers, fullerenes or carbon nanostructures, quantum dots, nano-components derived from bioimitation or biomimetics and their conjugated derivatives. These systems could be used to give direction to drug delivery on the way to a specific type of cells or tissue. They could be also used to improve the oral bioavilability, to sustain the effect of drugs or genes in a selected tissue. Although there might be some safety concerns with respect to the in vivo use of nanoparticles, studies are in place to determine the nature and extent of adverse events. It is considered necessary the increase of the regulations in order to assure the safety of nanoparticles. The lack of evidence about the risk of nanomaterials fabrication produces great uncertainty. It is considered that the toxicity, epidemiology, persistence and biocumulation of fabricated nano-materials are so far to be studied.
In spite of this, future prospects for the Applications of nanopharmacy would include the discovery of new agents Pharmaceuticals, the development of drug delivery systems with localization or specific addressing; besides the creation of "laboratories on a chip" that perform multiple functions in vitro and in vivo as well as implants and platforms for tissues. I chose this topic, because of the importance that I feel will have a future in my career and not only for the lives that could be improved thanks to this, but also for the interesting thing that is and the advances that can lead to generate not only in this area, also for example in the purification of waters in the future, On the other hand I knew about the subject in a superficial way but today I had the possibility of getting into this wonderful subject and I would like to continue learning from the future.
